SIMPLE SLIM-DOWN TRICK
Eat a lighter lunch and you could drop 26 pounds this year and never feel
hungry. A recent study in the journal Appetite found that people who opted
for a portion-controlled dish at midday took in about 250 fewer calories daily
and felt as full immediately afterward as those who served themselves from a
buffet. “The act of sitting down to a meal is satisfying regardless of how big
or small it is,” lead author David A. Levitsky, Ph.D., says.
MILK IT
Boost your brainpower with a glass of milk, a cup of yogurt or a small scoop of
ice cream. Downing dairy products at least once a day has been linked to
better memory, reasoning and organizational skills.
SUPERSIZE YOUR BRAIN
Researchers at Rhode Island Hospital’s Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory
Disorders Center have made a surprising discovery about fish oil and the
brain: Not only does fish oil improve cognitive function, but MRIs showed that
study subjects who took the supplement for 3 years had bigger brains than
those who did not.
A PEAR A DAY
A pear may be as good as the proverbial apple habit. In a Dutch study of more
than 20,000 people, eating apples and pears was linked to a lower stroke risk.
One theory about why: The fruits are high in dietary fiber—which can lower
blood pressure—as well as other nutrients with anti-inflammatory properties.
